Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the feeder to the Miami and Erie Canal through Port Jefferson in Shelby County, between stations 594 and 698. Roads, properties, bridges and other landmarks along the route are noted, including the Miami River. The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). Construction on the Miami and Erie Canal took place between 1825 and 1845, and the finished route connected Cincinnati and Toledo, as well as the Ohio River with Lake Erie. View on Ohio Memory.

An aqueduct can be one of two kinds of structures: a water passage through land artificially constructed for the purpose of boats, ships, etc. to travel, or a channel (any type) used to transport water from one location to another. The caption beneath the photograph reads: "Plum Creek Aqueduct, Between Sidney & Port Jefferson,| July, 1916." The attached description on the back of the page reads: "PHOTOGRAPH No. 21.| PLUM CREEK AQUEDUCT.| Plum Creek aqueduct between Sidney and Port Jefferson conveys the water on the Sidney Feeder. The timber is in bad state of preservation and leaks badly. The loss due to this amounts to some 12%. The masonry walls are in fair condition, but the structure should be replaced."
